Should I go through all the trouble to buy tickets Cairo - Alexandria and back with a travel agent or should I just get the tickets on the day we go to Alexandria.

??? You can easily buy the tickets yourself on the trainstation!
25LE one way first class.

Yeah, definitely buy tickets yourself. If you take the bus, it might be a good idea to get your ticket one day in advance.

It is also a good idea to book your train tickets in advance. Make sure you ask for a direct train or at least one that stops only once or twice as otherwise your journey can more than double in duration (approx two and a half hours in a direct train). First Class tickets are just over LE 40 and second class are just over LE 27. Trains are more comfortable and much faster than buses which are a little cheaper but if you decide to take a bus I suggest you go for the Super-Jet. Best of Luck anyway

Sorry, forgot to say that the ticket prices stated above are for a one way trip. These were last checked just over a year ago and might have gone a little higher now.

You can buy your tickets just before the train leaves but if you want to be sure to have seats in first or second class at a certain hour it's always good to go the day before.
Avoid going there by bus, except if you want to spend several hours stuck in traffic jam.
