car hire in Riviera Maya Posted: Tue January 27, 2009 01:50 PM UTC
Hello Folks
We are holidaying at El Dorado Sea Side, Riviera Maya at the end of May.
We would like to hire a car for a few days to explore by ourselves. Is it safe to do this and what kind of deal should I be looking for.
Any advice is welcome and I will acknowledge all replies.
regards
SWM

Should not be a problem. Make sure you get plenty of insurance. Obey the speed limit and have an extra $100 US just in case the police stop you even if your not doing anything wrong.

Hi,
if you want to take a look around on your own, i think the most safe and confortable way is using the ADO Buses. They have a Bus terminal at Playa Del Carmen, and you can catch a bus to Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba and ando to lots of other places.
The buses are really luxury and much cheaper than both excursions and car hire.
I always felt safe. The only "danger" is the Mexican way of driving, that it´s pretty wild.
Wish you a great stay in Mexico

We always rent a car. The price for a small car will run between 80-100 bucks with insurance.
Re: police. Yes, they have been know to stop tourists. They sometimes offer to let you pay them the fine. Just act like you don't understand them, have no money except the 100 pesos (about 9 USD) in your wallet. (always hide your money somewhere else besides your wallet so they can't see what you have)..Usually they will give up and send you on your way.
Avoid the gas stations in Puerto aventuras...They like to pull the money switch on tourists..always give them the exact amount.
There is so much to see on highway 307. Akumal is great for snorkeling, Cenotes Cristalino and Azul are great places for a quick dip and snorkle, Tulum and Xpu-ha has the best beaches. Get a good map showing you where everything is.

hello br
I think I'll give the car hire the elbow and stick to busses. Cheaper and ,I think, much ,more interesting.

hello jorgec25
I think your advice is probably the best, so I will take the bus and meet the local people and save some cash.

ADO bus leaves every hour from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen.
If you are planning a Playa--Coba--Chichen Itza--Playa loop, the better way is to rent a car, convenient and economic since you have at least 2 travellers.
