Laos boat from Muang Khua on the Nam Ou
Posted: Tue January 27, 2009 06:09 AM UTC
Hello all, has anyone taken a boat from Muang Khua down the Nam Ou to Luang Prabang. Any detail and or information on boats/operators and best way to get to Muang Khua would be greatly appreciated. I'm also curious on how long it takes a slow boat and how comfy or un-comfy the trip may be, ha.
As always, thanks for the help.

You should probably check in with the boatlanding master once you arrive in Muang Khua to let him know that you want to travel down to Moung Ngoi or Nong Khiaw since it would be very costly to hire a boat all the way to Luang Prabang. The trip down to Moung Ngoi takes about 6 hours and is very scenic. Nong Khiaw is slightly less than another hour south by boat and from Nong Khiaw most travellers transfer to the bus or songthaew for the 4 hour journey to Luang Prabang. You should also let the boatlanding masters at either Moung Ngoi or NongKhiaw know that you're wanting to take a boat all the way to Luang Prabang so that they can 'pool' or gather other travellers wanting to do the same to split the cost. The segments Muang Khua to Moung Ngoi and Moung Ngoi or Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang runs about U$100 subject to your bargaining skills. It's best to try and gather a group together to share the costs.
