New York City Vegetarian and other extraordinary restaurants in NY?
Posted: Mon January 26, 2009 10:56 AM UTC
Hi,

From my last visit I remember a japanese vegetarian restaurant close to Tiffanys. I'm looking for other restaurants - be it completely vegetarian or partly - but not just bland dishes.

I'd also like some tips on where else to go with my non-veg-friends. Places that are different from ordinary restaurants - not very expensive...

Thanks for any clues!

I've never been to this place, so I can't speak for the food, but there's a Chinese restaurant called Lucky Cheng's on 1st Ave and 1st Street. They "offer" male waiters in drag who specialize in humiliating male patrons. That's not for me, but many locals and tourists go for this kind of thing.

Lucky Cheng's draws lots of tourists for the waiters in drag, but it never gets repeat business because the food is mediocre at best.

I don't have any specific recommendations, but you can search for restaurants on menupages.com, which also lets you read reviews and see sample menus (prices may be out of date). Another good site is opentable.com, which lets you make reservations as well. It's also handy to search for restaurants that have availability at a specific time.

Try Bliss Cafe. its supposed to have very good vegetarian food. there are whole bunch of macrobiotic places that cater to part vegetarians. it is the city, there are tons of places.

i know of a vendor in chinatown who only makes chinese vegetarian dishes. he is buddhist. i would start looking at buddhist restaurants.

I recommend a restaurant called Wild Ginger, its a Pan-Asian vegan cafe and has two locations, one at 380 Broome Street in Manhattan (Soho area) and one at 112 Smith Street in Brooklyn, close to downtown. The food is good, interesting and varied. I go in Brooklyn mainly. The Brooklyn phone # 718 858-3880; the Manhattan # is 212 966-1883. Each one has a website.
There is also a Wild Ginger which has Thai cusine, so it has a broader variety of food, including meat dishes. I have been there as well, also very good food and interesting decor -- 51 Grove Street, Manhattan, 212 367-7200. My book club read a book called Wild Ginger, by AnChee Min (2004) and we went from there into the Wild Ginger restaurants! LOL.
