The cheapest way is probably to take the Smyril line ferry from Denmark or Norway. The Faroese airline, Atlantic Airways, flies from Copenhagen and Billund in Denmark and from Oslo in Norway. www.smyril-line.fo www.atlantic.fo
I don't know what Justin's definition of extremely cold is, but the weather forecast for next week shows temperatures between 5 and 10 Celcius. Not extremely cold in my opinion (ok, I admit it, I'm Danish and not used to Caribian temperatues all year).
You can fly Maersk Air from Billund and Copenhagen (both in Denmark) to Færøerne. Maersk Air advertise with tickets from DKK 1995 (app. EUR 270).
I have no clue how much it costs to sail, but it would have to be significant cheaper if I should take the ferry instead of the plane.
>I was thinking it was north of Scotland but these are >the Orkney Islands, how wrong can I be in my life......... >I feel ashamed!
The Faroe Islands are North of Scotland about 280km North West of the Shetland Islands. The climate is not as cold as many places of that latitude due to the warming effect of the gulf stream.
a return ticket from copenhagen to the faroe islands will cost you around 250 euros if bought in advance. atlantic airways and maersk air flies there. right now flights from stockholm to copenhagen are quite cheap too.
Don't know what Justin think is cold, but the fact is that Færøene isn't verry cold at all.
As for the cheapest way. My guess is that you take Smyrill line (http://www.smyril-line.fo/) from Bergen or Hanstholm in Denmark. Getting to Bergen from Stockholm is probably best by train. Contact Svenska Järnvägar (http://www.sj.se/) or Norske Statsbaner (www.nsb.no) for prices and information.
Or fly! There is fierce competition from Stockholm to Oslo these days with 50 departures a day thanks to the starting of Nordic Airlink (which will also take you to Copenhagen if you prefer that alternative) http://booking.nordicairlink.se/index.asp
AND Norwegian Air http://www.norwegian.no/ apart as well as the oldie SAS.
