I only have a few days to visit Laos on my next Asia trip. Which city should I choose and why?

I would definitely choose Luang Prabang. Its a charming historical small city with a lot to see in just a few days. A few things to see would be Wat Xieng Thong and other splendid Wats along with a walk up Mount Phu Si. You will want to take a boat on the Mekong River to see Pak Ou Caves, Kuang Si Falls, with stops along the way to see a whisky making village, and a silk weaving village. Also, don't miss out on the monks parading through the city at dawn to collect alms. I found just exploring the outside food market to be interesting and if you wish, you can rent a bicycle and explore the city that way.

Vientiane would also be an interesting place to visit for a few days, but in my opinion its not in the same class as LP. I did not think that Vientiane had quite the attractions to visit and it was more dusty and hotter with more mosquitos than LP. Have a nice trip! -Gary

i like both places and probaply prefer vientina a little to luang prabang cause the place has less tourists, but i think most people would prefer luang prabang as it is a very scenic town with a relaxed atmosphere.
both places should be able to keep you busy for a few days though.

I prefer Luang Prabang.

LP gets my vote too it is pretty, quiet & easy to wander around

Well, it looks like LP has won the vote! Next time I am in SE Asia, I will try to sneak away to LP on a weekend or during some down days when I have nothing to do. Thanks for the help, VT friends!

Luang Prabang is indeed and ideal place for a weekend visit.
