Malindi Malindi in March
Posted: Sun January 25, 2009 05:56 PM UTC
My husband and I will be staying in the Tranquility Apartments in Malindi. He's working for 4 weeks, I'm just along with no set plans. Is it safe for a woman on her own to go out walking, to a market? Were should I stay away from?
Any advice or information would be much appreciated. Also if there is another woman going to Malindi in March on a visit maybe we could move around the city together.

4 weeks in Malindi I'm very envious. There should be no problems in Malindi for you walking to the market or anywhere really. Things in Malindi are a lot more chilled than Mombasa and nothing like Nairobi. You should take the normal precautions as you would anywhere in the world at night. Moving around at night is easy enough as it’s not hard to get a taxi and tuk tuks seem to be everywhere.

Here is a link to my Malindi page you might find usefull.

don´t worry to walk on your own as a woman, Malindi is quite laid back and relaxed. If you are white, you will be hassled a bit at the market - but not because you are a woman, only because the curio traders hope to make good money with you. Same goes with the beach boys, though in Malindi they are not quite as bad as in Mombasa

Keep an eye out for snakes!

Seriously though, you can get about so easily with tuk tuks and everything is so spread out, you'll take tuktuks everywhere.

Just a free tip for you, the smoked sailfish at Old Man and the Sea restaurant is to die for!
