Botswana travelling from Maun to Kasane
Posted: Sun January 25, 2009 02:06 PM UTC
I'm planning a tour in Botswana in september. On some maps it seems thats travelling from Maun to Kasane is possible driving NE to Shorobe and on to Kachikau. But on other maps, there seems to be no road from Kachikau to Kasane and it looks like it's necessary to head E from Maun to Nata and then N to Kasane, making it a 600 km trip. Can anyone inform me on the possibilities to get from Maun to Kasane by road?

Maun to Kasane vis Nata is extremely easy. Its all tarred road. Check with me beofre you go so I can write some danger tips on the Nata area/road.

To go North through/around Chobe National Park is not tarred in many places. There is a road. What kind of vehicle will you have?

well driving to kasane from Nata is ok .. but the road from Nata to Kasane is soo bad alot of potholes... so you need to have a 4x4 about 3hrs drive...from maun to Nata is carpet

It does have a lot of potholes (I took photos), but I drove in a small car with no issues. Just steer around the deep ones.

It is possible to take a 4x4 through the parks on the tracks you ask about, Maun to Shorobe via Savute to Kasane. Done all the time, but do not consider without a 4x4 with high clearance. Map on this page:

Its a copy of the new 2009 Tracks4Africa map, so extremely uptodate.

Thanks for the tips. I did know the Tracks4Africa-map - that's how I found out it takes more than 10 houres to drive from Maun to Kasane without getting back to Nata ;-((

I think we'll ask when in Maun ... we'll see

Just over 3 months before leaving - can't wait!

Surely you need to add the Vic Falls on your itinerary, good experience and low costs.
