Cadiz Cadiz, Spain

We are visiting Cadiz (Andalucia) in May just for the day. We would like to do our own exploring and not go with the tour that the cruise ship is offering. Is it possible? Intereting places to see and do? Can we walk from the port to the city? Do they have a hop on hop off buses available from the port? Thanks.

Cadiz harbour is just at walkable distance from old city center. Cadiz is really a pleasant town and may is a perfect month beacuse not too hot, so you can easily have a sightseing walking tour and no need a bus. Cathedral, roman ruins, Genovese gardens, museums and some of the beaches are very close each others. Hope you enjoy this nice andalusian place!

There uis plenty to do for a day. if by aby chance you are going to be in Cadiz during the week of 10th to 17th May 2009 there is held at Jerez the annual Feria del Caballo (Horse fair). You can easily take a bus or train during the day up to Jerez and visit the feria grounds to see the pretty dresses and the prettier horses ! A Wednesday is usually good during the week but any day is fun.

If you are in Cadiz during 1st 2nd & 3rd of May this year, there is the annual moto GRAND PRIX that attracts literally thousands of motorbikers from all over the world along with bikes. So maybe avoid Jerez during those days unless you are a biker !

In Cadiz itself you have a fascinating old city with a really interesting history. Take the double deck tour bus to get an idea of the city maybe ? Most people will walk to the Cathedral and even climb up its west tower for fine scenes. All very close to the port and easy walking. (except the tower !)

make sure you get to the Caleta beach and the side facing the Atlantic. Also consider having something to eat nearby in the road where you can find some freshly caught fish for lunch.
