Alcohol & Bali Posted: Fri January 23, 2009 08:53 AM UTC
My 16 yo daughter is going to Bali next Monday. She's visiting a good friend, who moved to Bali with mother. Will my daughter be served alcohol, be able to get into clubs? She looks older than 16 & do not want anything bad to happen to her.
I've heard there is no age limit, but I've also heard there is.
Thank you for your time!

I've been to Bali twice before and from what I can remember there was an age limit for alcohol, 18 i think. However, i did go before the bombings in bali so maybe things have changed as they have got desperate for money so will sell to under-agers, who knows!? Im sure she'll be fine as long as she's with people who are responsible and she doesn't go anywhere by herself, especially at night!!

Hello,
It is difficult to answer this question with absolute assurances. The age limit is 18 as previous poster says, both for drinkning alchohol and for entry into nightclubs. under 18 can go to bars and night clubs if accompanied by an adult. HOWEVER there are some places which do not have checks at the door or at the bar. So there is always the danger.
I suppose the definitive answer to your question would be "Yes it will be possible for your daughter to get into some clubs and be served alchohol", so then it falls upon how responsible your daughter and her friend will be as far as giong to night clubs & drinking alchohol.
I don't want to appear to patronising and telling you your business as a parent, but you should stress to your daughter the dangers, surrounding some of these clubs with regards to drugs, which is a more serious problem than alchohol, and carries quite severe punishments, even for the smallest of amounts. I am not suggesting for a moment that your daughter and her friend are into anything like that, but the danger is that it is possible even highly likely that they will be approached, and asked if they want something, it could even be an undercover policeman or ploicewoman who makes the offer, they should be made aware that if anything like that happens, they make it very clear, the answer is "NO THANK YOU" and walk away from the person very quickly, and do not stand talking to that person for longer than it takes to say it. I am sure that your daughter already knows about that, but I believe it needs to be stressed even more for here in Bali.
You should also maybe think about organising a chaperone for your daughter and her friend (maybe her friends mother wil already be thinking about it), they might not like it, but it would be better.
Monday is the Chinese New Year, and is being celebrated here in Bali in a Big way, (especially Kuta/Seminyak and Legian), there will be lots of parties and special events in the clubs for at least the following 4 days (then is's the weekend again) so there will be lots of opportunities for them to get into many places.
It is unusual for "Bad" things to happen (although things do sometimes happen, of course, when you get lots of youngsters (and older generation also) all together having fun especially when under the influence of alchohol) but mostly everybody has a good time, and I am sure that your daughter and her friend will also have a good time over here.
