Marrakesh Shipping purchases home

Does anyone know the best way to ship purchases home from Marrakech and Fez? We are hoping to make at least one large purchase, and since we will be backpacking, we won't have room for more than a couple of small items in our bags.

When we were in Fez last year we had to get a spare key for my mother-in-laws mobility scooter sent from the UK. It cost over £90 with FEDEX and took three days. It was worth it as the scooter was useless otherwise.
We also looked at shipping a large tagine back with FEDEX. I cannot remember how much it was going to cost but we decided that paying excess baggage was cheaper. In the end we didn't get charged anything at all. But that does not help you. Whichever courier you use (local postal service?) make sure they realise that you want sea mail.

Hello Susan,
If you are buying a carpet the vendor can usually arrange shipping for you. Alternatively you can send up to 30KG in one parcel from the post office.
Take everything you wish to send in an open box as the customs man will want to inspect the parcel. He is only there at certain times, so you should check this out beforehand. Also all parcels have to be wrapped in a nylon sack, these are readily available in the souk.
I hope that helps
Sue

I forgot to mention that there are 2 rates. Economic and Priority, I have sent goods using both and they take exactly the same time to arrive, Priority comes with more insurance, and is much more expensive.

Sorry. Got Fes on the brain, we were in Marrakech at the time - not that it makes that much difference. We go to Fes next month, so we'll know how to ship anything else back this time.

Normally its part of the deal with the vendor but it's suprising how small large packages can become- particularly with carpets!!

I've just talked to my niece about this. She tells me that post to the UK and Europe is all air mail and you can only nominate sea mail for the US and Australia. Susanteachesmusic should be OK for the states, the rest of us can only ask when it happens.
