Hi AL and Mary
finally you will be here visiting us.
Those are good news. I'll be glad to welcome you and give you some tips about places to see and what to do.
The so called "historic district" or "old town" is mainly around "downtown" which comprises a portion of land from the castle (one hill) to Bairro Alto (another hill). BTW Lisbon is hilly (7 hills as many other historical towns in the world). Nevertheless, many attractions are walking distance from downtown allowing you to book hotel in that area.
Some other major tourist attractions are easy achieveable with public transportation.
While in Lisbon, and besides the castle, the Cathedral, the museums, and the churches, you should use the 28 tram to reach the Alfama and see the wonderful views of some miradouros (belvederes). Then take #15 to Belem and enjoy the monastery, the monuments and the river. ANd of course do not miss the "Pasteis de Belém" (custard tarts) just across the street to Jerónimos monastery.
Use Santa Justa's lift to get up to the Bairro Alto and just enjoy strolling, looking, eating and drinking. Don't miss the Cafe Brasiliera in the Rua Garret.
Get out of Lisbon by taking a ferry to Cacilhas or the bus to Cristo Rei the giant statue of Christ on the other side of the river.
Take the train to Cascais for 1 day on that nice fisherman's village
Another day take the train to Sintra and visit the nice palaces.
You see many attractions are waiting for you.
About the weather.... well to far yet to say but usualy it's fairly warm in September. On the days before arrival try to see
