where to stay outside Lyon Posted: Wed January 21, 2009 02:14 AM UTC
We'd like to stay within a 45 min drive of Lyon in a smaller town (prefer a winery, bed and breakfast) in or near a small town. We have 4 days to discover Burgundy and we have a car. We will drive to Lyon for a day, but other areas too. Please recommend!

We enjoyed staying in Macon, about 35 miles north of Lyon .
It was September and the Vendange was underway. The small hotel we stayed in was full of negotiants and wine buyers from all over Europe. It was an old building, a Logis de France ( www. logis-de-france.fr). I'm afraid I do not remember the name - and it was 10 or 11 years ago so may have changed.
But Macon, would not only be a pleasant place for a short stay but would make a good base too.

I just love staying in the Hotel Bourgogne in Cluny. Cluny is a great little town with a very old abbey and this hotel is built right into the ruins of it. From some windows you can see the excavation sites.I've stayed there a couple of times so far and I know I will be back.
I don't know how long of a drive this would be from Lyon, though. The distance is 88 km, probably a bit more than 45 minutes, but less than one hour.

You do of course have many options.
There is a wonderful little hotel called La Reconce not far from Macon (as posted above) that is part of the "Relais du Silence" group. These hotels must meet criteria of being peaceful and offering excellent food. Their prices are also quite affordable.
You can check it out here.

And of course, if you go to Burgundy and Beaune, you must book a table at "Ma cuisine" in Beaune.
Enjoy!

To me Burgundy is all about Gevrey Chambertin and Nuits St Georges and those gorgeous reds. So I would want to stay in the heart of the Cote d'Or within range of Beaune and Dijon. One small Logis in Fixin is remembered with affection. But Fixin is too far away from Lyon I suppose.

depends what you want a more city like feel or a small village feel???
smaller town, winery, BB,then i think you will realised Lyon is a big city, heavy traffic in fact jams, around its left the A6 and on the right the continuation of the beltway blvd Laurent Bonnevay, taken many many times.
For Lyon itself the very best, known to all is
Antic Wine, 18 Rue Boeuf, Lyon 5éme arrondissement.metro vieux Lyon
45 can take you to get out of Lyon. Having said that you can go a bit further maybe 1H30 and stay/visit the coteaux de Lyonnais famous wines use in the kitchen of one call Paul Bocuse at these places
Millery. a bit further maybe 2hrs and north of Lyon you can visit better places such as St Jean des vignes, Chasselay,poleymieux-au-mont-d'or, and St-didier-au-mont-d'or , Taluyers along the A6.
these are some of my favorites, for this region.

GAEC LE BOUC ET LE TREILLE no website but contact here for a visit

http://www.guyot-gourmet.com/

you should have a handful with these, you can choose according to the time you allowed them. Some can offer accommodation on site like Prapin, and guyot has a great restaurant.
have some homework to do ::)

Has anyone ever heard of Chateau de Nobles? It's a bed and breakfast in Brancion, near Macon. We may stay there....

Chapelle-sous-Brancion ,its the main site at this town.Chateau de Nobles, ruined during the crusades, and at the expense of the dukes of burgundy. Of course its known. It is much closer to the city of Tournus, south burgundy dept of saone-et-loire No 71.(give names to the region and the departments but also numbers as well)
you can contact them here E.mail : cheriseyb@free.fr
and they do have bed and breakfast accomm and wines everyday with reservations.
this is the site that talks about the region, and you should try visit Tournus, great pieces of art and history in town, this is beautiful deep France, so site is in French.

Thank you so much. I have been in contact a few times with Chateau de Noble and they do have rooms available during our dates of visit. The location looks great, for the sites we want to visit...also, for bicycling. And the markets of Bruene look fabulous. I will make reservations to stay there, while we tour Burgundy.
(See Pedmar...I took your advice! We'll visit one region, not two!) Thank you. Kathy
