Hi there!

How can I get to Fraser Island from Brisbane city (i.e. how long does it take to get there?) Is it closer to Surfers paradise or Brisbane?

Is Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary easy to get to from Brisbane city too?

Thaks very much in advance :o)

LONE PINE
Mirimar Boat Cruise

Phone: 1300 729 742 (24 hours) or

One fun option would be to catch the 8:45am bus to Lone Pine in the morning and return to the city by boat at 1:30pm or you could boat cruise to Lone Pine, arriving at 11:30am and return to the city by bus after closing time 5:00pm.

For more information on Brisbane City Council buses, ferries and phone 13 12 30

or you can drive probably 30 minutes from inner city depending on time of day.

And there are day tours.

There are a number of tours to Fraser Island for varying lengths of time.
http://www.seefraserisland.com/ Just google for more options or await more VT replies.

It is closer to Brisbane than Surfers and even closer to Sunshine Coast.

Distance from Brisbane 295 k. All sealed roads. Time it takes depends what part of city you leave from and time of day. The Gateway Bridge can be really slow at certain times of the day if you are on south side.

Harvey Bay is the mainland access point to Fraser then it is barge across with 4WD.There may be other options.

The drive along beach at Fraser is a designated road and rules apply. Check out warnings re tide etc..

Tour operators from Brisbane allow three and a half hours drive time to get to the south tip of Fraser Island with stops to see coloured sand hills on the way. Fraser Isle is north of Brisbane and Gold Coast is an hours drive south of Brisbane. So add an other hour to the drive time. It is not feasible to do a one day return road trip given the time it takes to get there and back and the time it takes to see all of the attractions. An overnight is recommended. One requires a permit to drive on Fraser island, 4x4 vehicle is required and specialist knowledge is also required so a tour (rather than do-it-yourself) is highly recommended.

Just don't miss Fraser Island:)
They have good backpacker 4x4 trips from Harvey Bay to Fraser Island. These can be day trips or overnight trips.Usually camping trips, they supply all the equipment needed.
It's a good way to do it as you don't have to worry about permits or driving.( As much as driving on Fraser is sooooooo much fun!!)
I would consider the above if you can, before doing a bus tour of Fraser...just not the same as 4x4:)

Hervey Bay being three and a half hours drive north of Brisbane so an overnight somewhere is probably required if doing a day trip to Fraser Isle from that starting point.

Make sure you get to Fraser Island, it is fantastic. We had 7 days at Noosa Heads on the Sunshine Coast and took a guided day tour in a 4 wheel drive, drove along the beach for 40 km , can be dangerous due to tide movements. Phots on my Fraser island page.

There will be buses from Brisbane that will get you close to FI. Then take a backpackers bus tour or a more upmarket tour, whatever suits. FI is approx 3 hour drive from Brisbane.

Good Luck,
Mike
