santiago I am coming, Posted: Mon January 19, 2009 09:14 PM UTC
hello to fellow travellers,
I have a question I like to pose to you, if you have the right information please let me know quicly because I have little time to decide.
I will be in arequipa on the 27 of january, heading to santiago but I dont know how as yet, the distance is pretty far, to take a flight is not a bad idea, however for one way ticket is some money I could spend differently, could rent a car for example and probably have some rest to spend in an overnight hotel, I wouldnt mind taking the bus, my questions are: Do you know low cost airline, I repeat low cost flights nothing to do with LAN, do you have any informations about buses from arequipa to santiago, how long time, if it is possible to break the trip, and the name of the bus line?
Thanks for your cooperation

Cruz del Sol is the bus line you can take from Arequipa to Arica, Chile via Tacna. Takes about 7 hours depending on how long the border crossing takes. From Arica there is a quasi low cost airline Sky https://www.skyairline.cl/Default.aspx
and you might be able to get a fairly low cost one way ticket to Santiago. You will just have to price it out and see what fares are available.
As for renting a car, I would not recommend it first of all the issue of taking a rental car across borders in South America is difficult at best and expensive if you could even find a company that would allow you to drop off in another country.

The bus lines posted above do not have direct service from Arequipa to Santiago without backtracking to Lima. That would be a long backtrack.

Re: santiago I am coming, Posted: Thu January 22, 2009 12:32 AM UTC
thanks all for your advices,I have found a solution which will save me time and stress, it will cost me about 200 dollars, to ride a cruzero bus from cusco to arequipa, then catch a flight by sky airline form arequipa to santiago.
I will make it in santiago on schedule, I see you on my next move.

I'm just checking the sky airlines website and I don't see any flights from Arequipa to Santiago. Can you send me a link or details of the flight you have booked. This would be an ideal route for the trip I'm planning for the spring.
Thanks in adavance

You are absolutely right, the web site of SKY AIRLINE do not show the flight from Arequipa, that is just a detail I cant explain, but I can assure you there are three flight during the week, you have to check a tour operator, I did in arequipa om plaza de arma, the agency of sky is also there, it was easy to book, if you do in advance you can save money. Try some other way to contact the airline you will be successful, I can prove it by being in santiago today.
