We have just about decided to stay at the Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel. Anyone have any comments on this hotel?

Fantastic...Rooms big...Service good, and positioning is really great. The food night market is basically across the road, and the river is about 500 meters away.We walked to the old city from there as well, and the night market itself is 5 minutes walk. When we go back we will stay there again. More detail on my Chiang Mai pages.
enjoy the trip

Mike

Re: Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel Posted: Mon January 19, 2009 09:02 AM UTC
Hi Wal - that hotel is probably excellent value for money and centrally located. However for me Chiang Mai is for me a friendly green small town which is easy to get around and where you can enjoy exploring on foot. On my first visit I stayed in a small guest house on the banks of the Mae Ping with an open dining area. Simple but relaxing and excellent value. The people were so kind. For me, stopping at a large and fairly modern hotel block in Chiang Mai would make the place feel like downtown Bangkok, which it isn't. I would feel that I was in any large city in Asia. But Chiang Mai is more like a town than a city and it's easy to move around but more importantly it is very green. A pity not to stay surrounded by the greenery and find somewhere closer to the ground ? Just my own idea and each to his own. You will enjoy Northern Thailand.

Thanks Mike & Nige, your advice is really appreciated. I think we will be staying at the Chiang Mai Plaza as the ladies want a bit of luxury after 5 weeks touring France, Italy and Switzerland by car AND watching the budget. If I was travelling alone I would go Nige's way.

Hi,
Chiang Mai Plaza is in the heart of Chiang Mai and is walking distance to the night market.
The staff are extremely friendly and willing to help with anything that you may ask them.
Breakfast was excellent and had a variety of English, American and Thai specialities.
The rooms are spacious but not the most modern.
The decor at the entrance to the hotel is incredible.
The bar is small but intimate and they have musicians playing traditional music as you chat.
There are quite a few excellent massage places across the road to the hotel.
There are shops within the hotel (especially the little shop that sells bags and Jewellery) The owner had excellent specials (much cheaper than anywhere else in Thailand!!) and beautiful things that i wish i had bought more of now!
I highly recommend this hotel is is well situated and the staff make you feel welcome as soon as you arrive.

Re: Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel Posted: Tue April 28, 2009 11:03 AM UTC
My wife and I stayed at the Chiang-Mai Plaza for 5 nights and found it to be comfortable and, for the price, definately good value. The downstairs public areas are very nice, but rooms are spacious but a little dated (based on our room - but it was their 'standard' room). We were on a low floor so didn't have a great view. The pool area is quite nice and in terms of location the hotel is very well placed. It is about 15 minutes from the airport and right on the South end of the night bazaar. Even walking into the walled old town is not a lot more than 10-15 minutes from here.

Yes, we are looking forward to our stay of 4 nights. We have chosen the upper floors with a wee bit more luxury. Is the breakfast an ABF (American full breakfast) or just a simple one? I do enjoy a liesurely buffet breakfast in Asia with all the bells and whistles.

It is a full breakfast, with all the eastern options. You can either sit inside, or outside in the garden...depending on the weather.
