One of the larger "pay as you go" would be the wifi connectivity with AT&T with "hot spots" at Starbucks and other areas that are quite common across the country. Much depends on the route you plan to take.

once your route is decided check the various telco providers for the best selection. Most also will sell "edge cards" that plug into your laptop to provide cell phone connectivity by the laptop.

Verizion is another large carrier to check out.

If you are staying in hotels, they will probably have an either net plug in the hotel room or a computer room for a small fee.

I have gone to a very small notebook just for this reason. No Sims and no access cards or adapters and cell signal.

Wifi or either net, works for me.

Personally I wouldn't bother with a "pay as you go" option as so many bars, coffee shops, hotels etc. compete with each other on the basis of offering free WiFi. You can always find somewhere to get online pretty much no matter where you are.

There really isn't pay-as-you go internet plans with the major carriers.
Known as mobile broadband as opposed to Wifi, the carriers such as AT&T, Verizon, Sprint generally require you to sign up for a yearly contract.
