Agadir Surfing

Hi, we are visiting Morocco in August for the first time and will be staying in Agadir. We were just wondering if there is Surf board hire on the beach in Agadir. If so, how much is it?
Many thanks

hi

yes there are a few different surf hire places along the long sandy beach roughly 80 dirams which is roughly £6 for board and suit hire you wont have to find them just go for a walk along the beach and people will come up and ask you what you want (anything) and they will find it for you.they also know about the smaller beaches which are suppose to be good surfing they will take if you have no car.
we have just got back from there and its lovely we hired a car (£30 aday cheaper if you book it before you go) for a couple of days travelled to tiznit (good Silver) and some of the other towns and beaches the driving is very easy once you are out of the towns.
do everything and have a great time we cant wait to go back.

In all the years I've been going to Agadir I have never seen surfing proper on Agadir beach, the waves just aren't right there. What you do see on Agadir beach is wind/kite surfing.

Agadir’s coastline further away from the tourist scene has some of the world’s best surf spots such as Anchor Point, Boilers and Killers. Reefs with very long right handers and excellent beach breaks for all levels, from total beginners to experts.

A few kilometres north of Agadir, lies the fishing village and surfing Mecca of Taghazout. Although Taghazout has become a surfer hideaway, the village still lives according to the local tradition yet much of the activities are related to tourism and there are many restaurants and shops around geared to travellers.

There is an excellent Surfcamp near Taghazout in Tamrhakht which is open all year, all inclusive and for all levels, offering guided tours to the best spots in the area while providing surf classes for beginners. Instructors speak perfect English, French, and Spanish and they have French Federation and Lifeguard diplomas.

Another 20 minutes up the coast there are long stretches of beach in Tamri that pick up most swell when all the other spots are flat. Getting in and out of the water is hard since here are lots of very sharp rocks (rating 5.5).

Further north you can probably find more breaks, but finding access to them is the hardest bit. South of Essaouira are some more surf spots but they are often blown out.

If you are a keen surfer you will know what I'm talking about. Bring you own surf gear as those supplied may be downright dangerous and not cheap to hire. Make sure you are adequately insured for extreme sports.

Apologies for jumping on this thread but this sounds like the sort of information that I've been looking for. I'm a complete beginner at surfing but want to give it a go. Taghazout sounds like a good place to start. What is accomodation like there? Are there many hostels or budget hotels? How much would it typically cost for surfing lessons per day? I'm going to be in Morocco for a week at the start of March. What are the water temperatures like at this time of year?

Hi, Sorry about the delay as I don't get e-mail notifications of replies to the post and don't always check-in.

Taghazout is a small Berber fishing village just 18Km north of Agadir, I don't know if the Supratours or CTM buses go there as this is not shown on the bus schedule, a taxi ride should not be too expensive.

If you look at the third link below, on holiday rentals, you will see that accommodation for apartments is expensive, I'm sure this is purely to cash in on surfers. Once you arrive it will be so easy to ask literally anyone you see for a cheap place to stay, conditions may be spartan but yuo get what you pay for in small places like this.

Prices I have seen for lessons are 200Dh for a 1 hour class, 1400Dh for 10 hour class, wetsuit included. Surf rentals are 70Dh for 1 hour or 210Dh for the day.

Not sure about condirions for this time of year or water temperature but the air temp can be anything between 12°C and 32°C in the day time.
