| Kiruna | Jonkoping to Kiruna Posted: Thu November 6, 2003 12:00 PM UTC
Hej,
1) Would like to find out how to get from Jonkoping to Kiruna. There seemed to be no SJ trains. And i heard its operated by Connex. But the website is in Swedish. Does anyone know how i can get there? And how much does it cost for a student? 2) Are there any student hostels in Kiruna? |

Yes it's Connex these days. SJ gave up some years ago and the popular Tågkompaniet run the line successfully until last June when Connex for some mysterious reason (underbid) won the tender...grrr...
I assume you want to travel by night train (it's far!) in which case a simple couchette (rather than a sleeper) is 600 SEK single journey. You get around 30% discount as a student if you hold a Swedish (only) student card from CSN, Mesenat or Studentkortet. If you have an SFS student card, it has to be dated and have a white-grey sticker (NOT light red) saying "SJ/SAS rabatt".

i remember the returned flights from stockholm to kiruna on sas costed about 850sek for youth last time i checked. but after adding up the cost to get to stockholm from jonkoping, i guess it may not be too much different from taking the train but u'll get to save a lot of time though. but if u wanna see the scenery then it's another story :)
as for hostel, check out this one http://www.yellowhouse.nu/ or u can check this hotel, it doesn't cost much either http://www.hotellkebne.com/

The Connex site is in Swedish!! :( I heard from one of my friends that they have a fixed fare? That sounds really strange...
If i were to go from JK, where do i change the trains? Do you know where i can get the timetable? We still havent got our CSN, etc cards so all i have is my ISIC card and my temporary (PAPER!!) card. would either work??

Yes I know it's in Swedish, that's why I gave you the phone number instead as they will speak English.
You would have to ask about the student card when you call them. You would have to change in Stockholm which is the starting point for the Connex trains. If you don't want to see the scenery (and right now it's a dark time of year anyway) or get an estimation for the size of this country, then there are indeed good flight deals too. Maybe even with connections from Jönköping airport via Stockholm...SAS flies that route I know. Otherwise get to Stockholm and try the really cheap Nordic Airlink to Luleå from where it's not THAT far (everything is relative in Sweden). http://booking.nordicairlink.se/index.asp (might be only in Swedish too but maybe you could ask a friend).

I haven't received my student card either yet, they are delayed this year (VERY annoying since I need it!). You can get a temporary card (the paper one you said you have?) from the student service to use instead. Just check that it's valid for SJ/SAS discount (ask the studentservice or if it's marked with SJ/SAS)
