The Turkish Lira - the official local currency. If you need to use ATMs you should have no difficulty finding one.

I will only be there from 9 to about 3. how much should I bring. we are planning on staying in and around Izmir. I want to try to hire a taxi for the day and will only buy a few souveniers

Are you stopping off there on a cruise? If so, I suggest you aske the cruise Director about local costs - taxi, coffee, lunch + drinks etc and then withdraw a suitable amount from an ATM on arrival. ( There may be a free shuttle from the ship to the city - IF - you are on a cruise.)
If you have a Nationwide Flexaccount you can withdraw cash in foreign currenct without commission or other charges.

Hi Lisa and John,

Bring your Debbit cards with you and withdraw TL from ATM's .This is the Best way.Do not carry any money with you.

No need to carry any money with you.Just carry a debbit card.Easy to use.
You dont need to go to exchange office for to change to money.
