January 2004 holiday in Egypt Posted: Thu November 6, 2003 05:53 AM UTC
Hi, I am planning to holiday in Egypt with a friend in late Jan04 All that I am looking for is some sunshine, some diving and meeting at least a few real Egyptians! I have had a short visit to Cairo in the past and want to experience the Red Sea this time.
Should I choose Sharm el S. or go to Hurghada?
Any advice would be welcome.
Will it still be nice and warm/hot in Jan?
Many thanks,
Graham

For the current temp check www.weather.com .
Hard choice between the two. It depends also for how long. In Hurghada you can easily visit Luxor.
I like Sharm myself.
The winter (for lack of another word) in the area is WINDY.
Meeting 'real Egyptians' in either setting off season can prove difficult, so you have to be creative.
The other thing is that as it is the off season for the resort areas there will be a lot less people about, so this could be a big plus for meeting up with locals.
Egypt is wonderful and I cannot recommend it more!

Many thanks, I am looking forward to it already. Winter in the UK is so cold and miserable, visiting Egypt should be a huge tonic! Who knows, I might even meet some real VTers there!
Cheers! Graham

HI, I am Irish! I wonder where they meet/
Seriously, I dont mind meeting Germans or Italians, and a few Egyptians would be nice too!
I hope to be there for around 2 weeks, so I do have time to explore a little too..
Once again, thanks to the VTers!

Hi! Well, I never been at Hurghada, but I did talk to some people who had been at both places and it depends of what You are looking for, Sinai is very interesting too, I have only been in Sharm twice and I will be back even next Year - Check my Sharm page for info!
Have a nice trip!

Hi Graham,
if you go to Hurghada or Sharm, you will be a tourist under "million" other tourists. Hurgh & Sharm are the 2 most expensive places in Egypt - made for tourism.
If you like to see how people (Egypt & Bedouin) really live, go to Sinai: Dahab or Nuweiba.
In Dahab you will find coffee-shops, restaurants, diving- and windsurf-centers, shops, internetcafes, nice diving-places at Eelgarden, Canyon, Blue Hole, Ras Abu Gallum...
In Nuweiba the live of the Bedouin is quiet, because there are not many tourists. But the landscape is great and also the sea for snorkeling and swimming or the desert for making safaris with the Bedouin.
In Dahab you will find cheap nice hotels or camps for sleeping, in Nuweiba there are cheap camps in Nuweiba-Mzaina. And of course you will find big first-class-hotels in Dahab & Nuweiba if you prefere to stay in a hotel like this.
If you have special questions: Send me an e-mail. Maybe I can help you by giving you informations or adresses from friends in Hurghada, Dahab, Nuweiba because I am often there.
Don't worry about the weather - it will be warm in January. I was in Sharm last December and I arrived with warm clothes from cold Germany - it was warm/hot and I needed a warm pullover/jacket only in the evening/night or early in the morning.
Many greets Eve :-)
