Garmisch-Partenkirchen G-P Sledging for kids
Posted: Tue January 13, 2009 12:06 PM UTC
Hi there,

We are not skiers but want to sledge with our kids (age 5 and 7). Does Garmisch-Partenkirchen have a specific area for this or can it be done on any lower slopes? Also can we do this with out having to buy a full ski pass - or is there a limited pass for sledging available. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You won't have difficulties finding a hill suitable to sledge with your kids.

Besides, there are at least four slopes - sometimes roads - that are open for sledges, but notice, they are only partially suitable for children, so one adult should always go with them:

1) Hausberg
Length: 3,900 m
Height: 650 m

Take the "Hausbergbahn" up the mountain and follow the signposts to the supported/prepared area for sledges.

Hausbergbahn leaves every Wednesday & Friday (for those with sledges) between 5 pm and 8 pm.
Adults: 9 EUR
Children: 6 EUR
You can use one ticket for as many runs as you like.

I suggest to come as early as possible (that's 5 o'clock) and do the first run at daylight.

2) Partnachalm
Length: 2,000 m
Height: 280 m

Unprepared slope, actually a street not cleared from snow. Only the lower part is suitable for children.

3) "Rodelbahn am Kainzenbad"
Length: 1,060 m
Height: 180 m

The shortest but - apparently - the most difficult slope. The second half is easier.

4) St. Martin am Grasberg
Length: 1600 m
Height: 320 m

Another road which is not cleared from snow with a medium to high level of difficulty.

Thanks so much Turtleshell...2 follow-ups: you say 5pm - can we sled in daylight? And also I presume we will not have any difficulty renting sleds/sledges (I don't even know what they are called!). Best wishes.

I don't know when you are going to leave for G-P, but these days, the sun sets at about a quarter to five. With every day, you can add one or two minutes.

A sledge is a "Schlitten" in German (a pluralis tantum: 1 Schlitten, 2 Schlitten ...) and can of course be rented in G-P. Ask the staff at guestouse/hotel. If they don't have two for you, you could rent them at "Snowboard & Skicenter Garmisch", 3 Mühlstraße.

With your "Schlitten" you go to the "Rodelbahn", and the sport is called "Rodeln" in German, especially in Bavaria.

Here is additional info:

http://www.skiwelt.de/rodeln/garmisch-partenkirchen/
http://www.garmisch-partenkirchen.de/de/4bd8e87e-2bb3-9f91-a679-9abdfb20d3b5.html

On the second website they write that you can hire a "Rodel" (Schlitten) to the left of Hausbergbahn at Skiverleih Ostler, phone 3999.

On another website I read that the track at Bayernhaus (which is the sledging track) is closed at the moment. Perhaps somebody who has been there knows more about the actual snow conditions.

Are you, by chance, in the military? If so, sleds can be rented VERY inexpensively from the MWR Office on the Army post in Garmisch. My wife and I plan to do just this when we visit Garmisch again in March (assuming there is snow). Have fun on your trip!
