You have three options, by boat (not advisable), fly or drive. Driving is by far the easiest, especially from Lagos to Cotonou. The 120 km will take around 2 hours depending on how busy the border is. I've had no issues crossing from Nigeria to Benin but coming back is a nightmare once you cross into Nigeria with police roadblocks every few km's costing you money and lots of time. Safety not really an issue but advisable to go with someone who has done the trip a few times and knows the protocol at the border. Expect corrupt officilas on the Nigerian side but the Benin side is great. Cotonou is a lovely city.
