Bosnia and Herzegovina Private Accommodations in the Winter
Posted: Sun January 11, 2009 02:09 PM UTC
I am planning on spending a little over two weeks between February 16 and March 4 in Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia, with most of my time being spent in Bosnia. I am hoping to not have to book hostels and such before going and thus be able to maintain the freedom of moving around as I please, but I am just wondering if I will encounter problems finding private accommodations in people's houses and apartments and so forth during February and early March? Is it significantly more difficult to find accommodations in the Winter than during the Summer, or should I be okay?

Also, just an opinion question, since I've never been to the area: Currently, I'm hoping to distribute my time by having roughly 4 days in Slovenia, 5 days in Croatia, and 6 days in Bosnia. I am mostly interested in Bosnia because of recent history. Input on this distribution?

I think you might do better to stay in hostels and gostilna, in Slovenia at least. I have visited neither Croatia nor Bosnia, so cannot comment on those countries.

I have never seen evidence of people offering accommodation in their houses/apartments etc, and do not think this is a widespread practice. I have no idea how you would set about finding such accommodation in Slovenia (even in the capital, Ljubljana).

Slovenia is a popular tourist destination, especially for Austrians, Germans and Italians (including in the winter, for skiing etc)so there is plenty of accommodation choice. You should look at the excellent Slovenia tourist info site for ideas:

You could also look at www.couchsurfing.com

I think you would be foolish to arrive in Slovenia without having booked accommodation, at least for the first couple of nights.

Considering your other posting about flights out of Bosnia, I would suggest some revision of your schedule, in case this is possible, of course.
If you want to visit Dubrovnik in Croatia and Mostar in Bosnia, you might try the following:
Slovenia and the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, then Dubrovnik, Mostar and Sarajevo, Zagreb and a flight out of Zagreb. Or:
Slovenia, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Mostar, Dubrovnik, the Dalmatian coast and again in Slovenia and then back with the same airline that brought you there in the beginning.
Of course, I don't know your interests and aim of your visit, but my idea was that Croatia is a very elongated country. So, you might decide to make this "circle" and travel around the snowy Dinaric Alps.

Hope that helps
