Fiji Itinerary questions for low budget trip to south pacific
Posted: Sat January 10, 2009 12:24 PM UTC
hi there!
reading previous posts i understand that as a generalization the south pasific islands are an expensive destination.
but do you think that it is possible to find the low budget path somewhere?
my main interests are tribes/villages/trekking/nature/beaches!
if you could suggest anything feasible in terms of cost/accessibility/safety it would be a great help, so i can focus to specific destinations in my ongoing research!
many thanks

Hey nikos

you can do the cheap thing in the islands. I have spent a lot of time in Fiji and Tonga and if you avoid the resorts there are quite a few very low budget option sin particualr in Fiji. Tonga cab be pretty dull but some of te outer islands are extrordinary.

Fiji is pretty messy at the momment the politicla situation is a bit scary but if you are going, use the local buses, such an experiece! and in geenral the fijian people are very open and welcoming. You can trek across the main island Vanua Levu, just make sure you take some kava for the villags you come across and u will generally find a place to sleep and they are always quick with a meal for travellers.........just be open and honest though obseve the customs, never touch a fijian on the head, never kiss a girl a on the cheek, and do not sneeze in their presence, comisrder awful manners..........I hope this is a help

cheers

On the whole, package deals to Pacific Islands could be considered very cheap. You can venture out of your "resort" (I use that word loosely) to see villages and can also go trekking. Often the resort staff can organise this for you.
