Botswana Best way to Francistown
Posted: Tue January 6, 2009 11:59 PM UTC
Hi I might be spending a 5 week placement in Francistown in june/july of this year and I was wondering the best and cheapest way to get there from UK - or from Johannesburg, as it is easy to fly there from London? Also what kinda activities are there to do in the area.
Cheers :)

Mate, Francistown does have an airport but I'm pretty sure it is for domestic flights only. Your best bet, if you do not want to drive, is to fly into (or drive to) Gabarone and then fly from there to Francistown.

Activities? Francistown is the gateway to the north, which has some of the best game reserves in the world: Chobe National Park, Moremi Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park and Nxai Pan National Park.

Francistown is also very close to Zimbabwe (90km to the border) - if you want to take the chance, you can visit Hwange National Park.

The city itself does have markets, shopping malls and a jazz nightclub called New Yorker (not sure whether this is still open).

you can fly to joburg which will be a lot cheaper than direct to Gaberone then either fly air botswana to francistown or if your being adventurous go by bus to Mafikeng and then by train to francistown from Ramatlhabama(Botswana side of border)
But your other 2 answers are probably more sensible than mine as I am an adventerous bugger who looks for the most difficult way to do something.
