How often do trains (or buses) run to and from Nikolayev during the summer? Does anyone have an approximate timetable?
Also, does anyone know what the best hotels are in Nikolayev and whether it would be necessary to have reservations?

If your traveling to Nikolaye , from Kiev ,, best bet is to take the train.. Kiev - Nikolaev...

If your in Odessa, take the min bus... they run houly almost ,, ride is about two hours.. quicker than the train Odessa, Nikolaeve.

If your traveling Kiev Odessa.. thats about 6 hr train ride.

I would make resversations,,, Hotels range from four star to 1 star..

There are at least 3 daily trains from Kyiv to Myckolayiv in summer, on some days you may have 5-6 train options. Buses and minibuses run frequently, and some can take you to Myckolayiv within 6 hours. From Odesa - the minibus is the best option as previously suggested. There used to be flights from Kyiv to Myckolayiv, and there may be some in summer, but this will become known only in spring after the summer airlines schedule is released.

I agree with all that has been written.
It depends on where you are going to begin your journey from.
We do this journey fairly regularly from Odessa to Nykolaev as that is where my wife comes from.
From Odessa it generally takes 2 and half hours.(Sometimes in summer the buses stop for a comfort/cigarette break) If you have luggage (large suitcase) then you will be charged for this.
There is also a larger bus that goes through some of the villages but this can take up to 1 hour longer.
The trains from odessa can take up to 6 hours.
Kiev trains travel through the day and night.

Thanks for your replies. This site is a useful forum and I might return for additional questions as it gets closer to my trip. My route will be Odessa - Nikolayev - Kiev - Petersburg - Helsinki - Reykjavik.

Great tip! Do you know if the mini buses run on a regular schedule, or do they require reservations? Also, as I will be based in Odessa (1/10 - 1/19), when is the last bus returning from Nikolaev.

My wife returned from Nikolaev to Odessa yesterday so this information is pretty recent!!
The mini buses run quite regularly and there is no finite timetable.When they are full they go.You cannot make reservations.
Look around the bus station in Odessa as there are often buses going at different times
She went from Niko to Odessa and with her luggage the fare was UAH 37,
the driver charged her extra for the luggage and it is usually placed in the aisle between seats
Even with the cold conditions it took 2hrs 30 mins.
She thinks that the last mini bus to Odessa is around 7 in the evening though she cannot be absolutely certain.
