Re: Need advise for short trip Posted: Sun March 1, 2009 09:29 PM UTC
I just returned (Feb 20 2009) from 3 days in Belize. I chose to do the Mayan ruins. Took a day trip ($102USD - Discovery Tours) to Lamanai. Fantastic tour - guides very knowledgeable and ruins are great. Also took a day trip (bus) to San Ignacio where I walked to Cahal Pech. Lots of walking (uphill!) involved - or you can cab it. I also took a local bus to Xuantunich. Walked the mile from the river to the ruins. Seemed a lot longer with the humidity - but coming back down is pretty easy. The ruins there are very impressive. The river crossing is also interesting. Take lots of water and sun screen. And if you take a bus, sit somewhere toward the front and make sure you get a seat. The buses can get really crowded - and it sucks to have to stand for the trip (3hrs). Make sure you try the local beer - Belikin Beer. It is really good after a long walk.
I stayed in Belize City for 3 nights. Stayed downtown at the Belcove Hotel ($32USD). Spartan rooms, but very friendly and helpful staff. Great location to boats if you choose to go to Caye Caulker or Ambergris for a day trip.
Belize City is very dirty, with poverty evident. Some street begging, but mostly friendly locals wanting to provide you with information and get you anything you need. All for a few dollars. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to run into Prince Charles Perez. This guy in extremely well-read and knows just about everything there is to know about Belize history.
I enjoyed my time there and am heading back late March. I will use Belize City as my base for a 2 day trip to Tikal. Might get a rental car this time.
Good luck and enjoy the country.
