getting thru airport customs w/ gifts for locals & maids Posted: Tue December 30, 2008 06:10 PM UTC
we are traveling to punta cana in about 10 days ( 1/9/09 ). i have been reading alot of reviews (thanks guys) to get tips & tricks :) we will be bringing gifts for the maids / gardeners and the children (yes, as well as $$ for tipping). I have separated the gift paks into clear gallon plastic ziplock bags. will most likely pak a few of these bags in each suitcase as not to surpass the weight limit. the gift bags include toys , cosmetics , clothing , sewing kits, buttons & fabric , $1 store bifocal & sun glasses ,household items etc....just a small variety of items in each bag. Do you think that customs will make a big deal of this and take each bag apart etc or do they just scan like regular USA airports ? Does anyonr know what is and isn't allowed to be brought in ? should i express that these are gift for locals? We don't want to be arrested our first day there :)Ant answers would be appreciated :) thanks !!

Clear case of worrying too much.
1. You need not to declare any of items you describe unless you have drugs and firearms
2. Chances are you'll go through without a question asked and if they ask if you have anyting to declare you say no (based on what you mention above).
Enjoy your trip and don't worry

I don't think you'll have a problem. If they ask, you can tell that those are gifts. If they don't ask, don't tell. What's forbidden to bring in is firearms, vegetable products and meat, plus more than 10,000 USD.

Hi , I don't want to rain on your parade but take a small word of advice from someone who has been travelling to the D.R. for the past 25 years. Maids are on of the most sought after positions in the Dominican Republic hotel industry. The reason -- these girls receive many " $tips" from patrons. Imagine working for 1-10 years how many lipsticks, body lotion , clothes etc. you will have rec'd. The truth of the matter is good old U.S. dollars is what is appreciated most of all. Unlike us many if not the majority of these women are the major breadwinner of their families and money to pay for food , rent and bills is foremost same as in any other country including your own. They can buy all the perfume, toys, cosmetics etc cheaply there too if they want or need them. This is not to say that if you have articles to donate to people off resort that they will not be appreciated. They will but, you need to get in touch with someone like Punta Cana Mike at Edenh Real or Debbie's Beyond the beach foundation (ask your resort rep. ) Unless you are visiting a local school and taking pencils, pens, lined notebooks which are always welcomed. I believe the guys who run The Bavaro Beach Runners used to collect donated items and deliver them to one of the well known charities. I understand your hearts are in the the right place but dollar store items unless it's school supplies are almost valueless to maids. Meanwhile have a great time and enjoy the country. I will be there myself Jan.18th. What resort are you going to?
