must see things to do in Bristol Posted: Tue December 23, 2008 06:01 PM UTC
Hi! I will be in Bristol for 1 day and a half so can someone tell me:
1)what are the must see activities in the center?
2)my hotel, CITY INN BRISTOL, is at Temple Way, Bristol, BS1 6BF but I cant find any map about the hotel. Is it far from the center?
3)how will I reach the hotel from Colston Hall when I'll arrive in Bristol?
thanx in advance!

Hi,
I've just moved to Bristol and so I'll not be able to be the perfect guide, but at least I'll try to help you somehow.
Your hotel seems to be very close to the main train station (Temple Meads) where a lot of buses pass, and about 1 Km far from the city centre.
This website may be interesting for you, have a look:
http://visitbristol.co.uk/
As for me (I still have to discover lots of places), in my to-visit-list I have for sure EXPLORE AT BRISTOL Museum (it's very big, they told me it can take you the whole day) and SS Great Britain. The first one is a science museum full of interesting and amazing things, and you can put your hands on many of them, the second one is an ancient ship.
That's all from me, I hope to hear your opinions on Bristol!
Regards,
Sergio

This page tells you exactly how to get to your hotel:
http://www.cityinn.com/bristol/location_transport.htm
If you put the hotel postcode (BS1 6BF) into www.streetmap.co.uk you will get an excellent map showing you exactly where it is in relation to other parts of the city centre.

Things to see and do - there's the Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge. It's nice to walk through Clifton, to get a feel for the Georgian architecture and then stumble upon Clifton 'village' before reaching the bridge. From there you can walk along the side of the gorge over the Clifton Downs.
The docks area is great with the SS Gt Britain, art galleries and museums.
A lesser known little treasure are the Christmas Steps just off the city centre. It's only a short narrow alley way with shops on either side but it's very Victorian in atmosphere.
There's lots more to see and other VT members will add to this list. Hope you enjoy your stay - perhaps you'll want to return for longer?
Best wishes,
Mike

Yes, I think I should have add one more day. Too late now, I'll be there 2(half day)-3(full day) of january.
Will I need a bus from the center to those places or is it possible to walk from SS Britain to the bridge? Because I wont have much time and I also like to relax in small cafes as I walk around a city.

Hi Konstantinos,
You might need a bus to get from the City Centre and the Docks if you're pushed for time but, sorry, I don't know the number of the bus. It's also an uphill walk.
The Christmas Steps are very near to the city centre but you'll need a map to find them because they are small and well hidden between the taller buildings. They are however near to the Colston Hall.
Have a great trip.

Hi,
as far as I could see, buses 8/8A/9/9A go to Clifton village leaving from Temple Meads, but you'd better check because I've not understood Bristol's bus system and their website is not very well done ( http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/content/Transport-Streets/Public-Transport/buses---routes-and-timetables.en )
In my opinion prices are quite expensive for buses in Bristol, and the daily ticket may be very good if you plan to take more than one bus during the day. Also remember that 2 stops journey costs only 80p but even only 3 stops cost 2.30!
If you have some minutes it would be good to enter a tourist information point and ask, I saw one in the centre, in a place they call "the fountains", just at the beginning of park street. Another one is inside the explore @ Bristol Museum, detailed timetables for the buses are available at the bus station.
That's all for now, I hope I said something useful for you!
Regards,
Sergio

Walking a city is the best way to feel it better. I really hope I wont need so many buses in a day. It will be nice to walk the center, visiting the @BRISTOL, taking a map from the INFO and then go to that Clifton area or these xmas steps or the SS Britain boat.

The bus that goes round Bristol Harbour is service 500 - see www.buglercoaches.co.uk/pagedraw.aspx?id=7 . You could also try the Bristol Waterbus service - see www.bristolferry.com .
The bus that goes up to the Clifton Suspension Bridge is bus service 8/8A which runs every 10 minutes and picks up outside Temple Meads Station as well as in the City Centre (do not take service 9 to Clifton as this goes the long way round). Clifton is up a steep hill so you might want to take the bus up the hill at least ! If you do decide to take the bus from Clifton back into the City, take bus 8A or 9).
