I am currently planning a trip that will begin in Jordan and end in Cairo. I am arriving in Amman at 1:30am and we are really only interested in visiting the Petra before taking the ferry to Egypt in Aqaba the next day. Is it possible to add a quick trip to the Dead Sea on our way to Petra? My main question though is what is the best way for me to travel from Amman to Petra and about how much should I expect to pay. Thanks for any help in advance.

As you arrive Amman too late and the distance between airport-Amman is the same as airport-Madaba then I think you better stay in Madaba before going to Petra.
Check this hotel http://www.mariamhotel.com/ they have airport pick-up and organize trip to petra as well...not too expensive.

There is a tour run by the Farah Hotel for about 30JD each from Amman to Petra stopping at Madaba, Mount Nebo, Bethany, Dead Sea, Karak Castle and Shobak Castle. The tour is transport only so you need to pay entrances to places that you want to visit(probably about another 30JD extra).

Transport direct from Amman to Petra by bus should cost 3.5JD each from Wahadat bus station. Its not comfortable but it is cheap.

The best way, and the shortest is the Desert way,( 240 KM) from Amman to Petra, directly. The cost per ride, stopping the service at Petra, is around 130 $, , with a car that contains 3 pax- with luggage
