Electronics are generally not as cheap in Brazil as they might be in the U.S., although prices on some items have come down a lot more recently.
If you have taken the bus from Barra into Praca da Se/Pelourinho, you may have noticed a very busy stretch (just after Praca Castro Alves) where the local residents shop. Just past this, but before you get to Rua Chile, is a staircase where handmade leather goods are displayed. If you go down the staircase, you reach a labyrinth of streets with small shops and little shopping malls that carry less expensive products, from electronics to clothing and everything in between, for the working class residents of the city. It's hard to give specific directions to any stores I know, but if you wander around, you might find what you are looking for. And you will certainly learn a lot more about the city than most tourists ever do.
Otherwise just hit Shopping Barra or Shopping Iguatemi to see if you can find something of quality in a price range that you find reasonable.
