Lake District National Park Unsure where to stay...
Posted: Sat December 20, 2008 03:06 PM UTC
Hello there,

I'm wanting to go to the Lake District on a long romantic weekend, also to do a lot of activities such as mountain biking, walks and boating.

I've looked at a feel lodges and cottages and they seem to be in a variety of areas. I was wondering where is the best village or town to stay. It would be nice to stay by the Lakes if possible.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and i thank you in advance for taking time to reply.

Kind regards,

Kay

Are you using the train or have you a car? If you are on the train you are very limited to Windermere (Transpennine Express Leeds to Windermere - change at Manchester Piccadilly and Oxenholme).
Even if you have a car the Windermere area is still the best place in my opinion to stay - shops, restaurants, cinema - and of course the lake itself. Have a look at the many VT pages on the Lakes and see what you think.

The advice on Windermere is good, but you can make use of the boats that ply the lake to get from place to place, this will give you a choice of different locations for accommodation.
Check timetables on the internet.
If you are there over a bank holiday, forget your car.
Outside of the bank holiday and end-July, to end of August time, you will be able to stay withing thirty miles and have a nice drive to your chosen activity centre.
