Frankfurt Travel Forum

Hello- We are traveling next week to Israel . We have a chance to extend our stopover in Frankfurt , Germany ( I have never been to europe )I was wondering if it's worth it since it's going to be sooooo cold this time of year-I am very excited to see such an awesome city and country but I don't want to freeze either !!! Also ,I would appreciate any suggestions while I am there ???

Low temperatures aren't a problem, although you may have the wrong clothing with you if you are about to visit Israel.
Generally speaking, a crisp, cold but blue winter day can be enchanting and beautiful - especially outside of cities. Cold rain and gray carpet clouds may be a bigger problem, and right now it is wet and cold.

While Frankfurt may be a good (albeit expensive) place to live and work, it is not so much a good place to visit, even in summer.

Would you fly into Paris, London, Rome or perhaps Munich, I would suggest to extend your stay. But Frankfurt? Perhaps you can manage to stay some 4-6 hours in Frankfurt. The airport is surprisingly close to downtown Frankfurt, and you can manage to see the Römer, the Opera and walk along river Main (on a sunny day) or see a gallery.

As suggested, I would try an alternate airport if possible, Munich is an excellent choice in Germany for a stop over, but your carrier will dictate that and it might be to late to change your routing.

Possible an open jaw would work, into Frankfurt and out of Munich to Israel.

If "next week" means Monday or Tuesday, I'd say yes - see the Christmas market and the whole atmosphere.

If later, i.e. on the holidays, the city will be more or less dead, shops closed, market finished.

I'm not sure you guys haven't written-off Frankfurt too easily. If you find museums interesting there are some excellent ones in Frankfurt. My favourite is the "cheese-wedge" (ie the Museum of Modern Art) which usually has an interesting exhibition (and a good permanent collection). But, if you are going to Israel, then you must visit the Jewish Museum (not too far from the "wedge").

If you've forgotten a present, or would like something that would appeal to an ex-Germanic Israeli, then the Christmas market is an excellent starting point. (There is plenty of choice when it comes to some more expensive shops, especially if your currency is not doing so well against the Euro right now!).

And there are some good restaurants around if you look. It's a while since I was last there, but there's a good (affordable!) fish restaurant - attached to a fish-shop - also near the "wedge". Sorry can't remember the name.

Thank You everybody - Lots of good advice !We can not change the stopover-city. Our travel dates will be Jan. 2nd -5th. We could easily rent a car and stay in a nearby city (with a few hours drive)- Any suggestions

You might hop the train and go to Berlin which is a fascinating city.
