Tibet Booking a tour from Kathmandu
Posted: Thu December 18, 2008 11:56 AM UTC
Hi. I plan to go to Tibet April 09. So far it seems that the most convenient thing to do is to sign up for a tour. However, I am thinking of joining a Lhasa tour from Nepal but I am thinking of going on to the rest of China and take the train back east. Has anyone done this, and is it feasible? I am also looking for travel partners for this trip --- I am generally going solo but I have two more friends who haven't made up their minds yet.

I have taken this overland trip to Lhasa but also returned back to Kathmandu 3 days later by road.

There was some other travellers on the tour who where conituning into China, so I don't think you will have a problem but you must get a proper tourist Visa for China.

When I did the trip the travel Agency in Kathmandu sorted out the Visa's for everyone for those who where returning back to Kathmandu because the Visa was on a piece of A4 paper and nothing goes into the passport, I was really disapointed at that but I still got to see Lhasa.

The reason is quite simple the Chinese do not like foreigners travelling from Nepal to see Tibet and return back again and not go onto China proper.

But if you are going onto see the rest of China you must get a proper Visa in your Passport like other countries do. Again the travel agency who will book your tour should be able get you a proper visa for China.

You shouldn't have any problems in Kathmandu with the Travel Agency most are realiable.

Have a good trip.

Easier to go in the opposite direction. See China first, go to Tibet Autonomous Region then on to Nepal.
