Region de Tombouctou By camper to Timbuktu
Posted: Thu December 18, 2008 11:44 AM UTC
I read in this forum:
" the road between Bamako and Timbuktu is excellent"

How exellent? Does anybody know if that road is possible to overcome by camper (motorhome). It is not 4X4.
I would like to reach Timbuktu by such a car from Morocco, through Mavretania to Senegal and at the end to Bamako and Timbuktu.
Any sugestions?

Hi,
Morocco and Mauritania are fine with a camper, but if you go through Senegal to get to Mali you have problems. From Senegal border to Bamako I very much doubt if your camper will pass.Better to take the road from Nouakchott to Ayoun el Atrous (still in Mauritania) and then south-east to Bamako. From Bamako up to Mopti and even further no problem, tarmac all the way. From there depending on the season and the route you choose, once again I doubt that a camper will make it. Others might be able to give you a good way of getting there, but quite frankly you're almost on a mission impossible.

Road from Mopti to Gao is nice. The problem is that you get of it to go to Timbuktu and that road is ... not good :)

It's a dirt road that has loads of bumps and hole due to heavy use and no maintenance. At least it was like that in the rainy season, but somehow I doubt it's much better when it's dry.

There is another road from Bamako to Timbuku that goes next to north bank of Niger but I didn't go that way and not sure how good it is. I read somewhere it's better and asfalt all the way but think I also read there are some security issues. So better check before you go or I hope someone will reply that took it and can give more info on it.

Hope this helps

Stevan
