Belize Fishing Flies
Posted: Tue December 16, 2008 04:43 PM UTC
My husband is hoping to do some bone fishing (fly fishing) while we are in Belize. He carries a travel type fly rod. The question we have is would you suggest we try to buy flies there from locals or would we be better off to purchase specific flies before we go down. Hoping there might be some anglers out there who can advise.
Thanks.

I am heading down in January and am also interested in what people have to say. When I was down last year I didn't fish but also didn't see a whole lot for sale for the do-it-yourselfer. Also of note – everything is way more expensive down there when it comes to any kind of sports gear. Anyway, looking forward to hearing some responses from people who have fished Belize – Thanks for asking the question!

Lots of Bonefish down there-small tarpon too.Just keep throwing stuff at them till something works. What I've done is bring extra hooks and jigs and some generic saltwater flies and I wind up giving away the hooks and leaders as gifts or I use them to swap for something that works.

Nothing beats half a live sardine for snapper and grouper and anything shiny and fast will catch you a small baracuda-I like a spoon by luhr jensen called a "crocodile spoon" and light tackle

Have fun-C

I asked my in-laws since they've spent the last two winters fishing in Belize and they said there's no need to bring your own flies, it's very easy to get them in Belize. If you happen to be staying in Caye Caulker, they recommend Anglers Abroad (http://www.anglersabroad.com/) as the best place to buy fly fishing gear. Hope this helps!

You'll like Caulker-Very laid back place. Not as busy as San Pedro.

The only Tackle shop I can remember by name on Ambergris is Captain Sharks.

When do you head out? I'm so jealous!-C

Check your VT account and I will tell you what flies worked where. I am in Belize Jan 17 to Feb 2 and planning to fish every day if possible.

Alright here's the scoop. Don't come without crazy charlies in #4 and #6. Buy them or tie them in different weights (different size eyes) for deeper/shallower water and wind/sink rates. My best colors were root beer, olive, tan and clear with white. If you use flies that resemble A bit of flash is essential. Bonefish and small jacks, etc loved these and the only reason to change flies was boredom on my part. Small and large clouser minnows in Chartreuse and white and olive and white were outstanding as well especially trolling for jacks and barracuda. Sadly I didn't land too many despite hooking them. A nine weight was a bit underpowered for the bigger fish especially when trolling. Big, bright streamers of any color combination will hook you up if you move them fast enough. Evening was best for this activity. This was a quick summary if you want any more info let me know.

Thanks for such a detailed response! We have Crazy Charlie's so that should do the trick for the bonefish, which is his interest. Hope you had a good trip. I appreciate your taking the time to write so promptly. We are in Panama and won't be in Belize till early March. Thanks again.
