Am I mad?
Posted: Mon November 3, 2003 11:57 AM UTC
I am strongly thinking of living in Padul. I don't have any Spanish but will live with English speakers. Is it very difficult to cope without the language? Am I too old. 50. What do you think? Should I just stay here and die?

Why to die? With 50 years you are still young. In any case you will have no problem in Padul neither with people nor with the language.

Well I'm 42 and just moved to Marbella, not too far from Granada. I only speak a little Spanish, but I manage and get by. I've have had problems witrh the move, but most of that is back in the UK, house sale etc.

My advice do it while you still can... I have had no regrets.

Stace :0)

Most of the areas at least at the coast of Spain (sorry I can not say anything about Padul), have english as second language... never is too late ...

Spanish people don't speak so good english, but they do understand some, especially the younger generation.
And also, Tara, you should know that, whatever your age is, you should always follow your dreams (unless you can handle to live with regrets for the rest of your life.. personnaly I couldn't); if you really want to move there, do it!
You will always manage! Language is not the biggest problem to cope with. You can probably find people to help you in the beginning.
And also, after living somewhere for a while, you WILL pick up the language. Especially if you take classes. Spanish is not a very difficult language (I believe).

Trust my experience: I moved to Sweden without speaking a word of Swedish, and now after 2 years I speak it almost fluently, without ever having taken any lesson.
Everything is possible as long as you like the place and you feel home.
Good luck!
/Anne

Uttz..... glad I did not learn italian lol

Most of the spanish people speaks english, specially in tourist areas as the coasts, of course maybe in a little village inside you may not find many english speakers, but as there is so much inmigration, lately even in remotes villague of Castilla you can find english speakers.

The work situation in most of the places in Spain obly any of us to learn english and to spend some time in Uk to perfect it. (sometimes in costal areas to work even in a shop you need to speak english and german)

Look on the bright side Jen!
You speak more Italian than I do
and I have no window in my bathroom....
It I did, I would see the "knappen" mountain.

A knappen mountain is a mountan with the name Knappen. But actually it's just a hill. They call it a mountain, but that's not the hill's fault

Jen, you could arise and go now, and go to Italee,
And a small cabin build there, of Foster's tinnies made.
Nine Italians could you have there, no room for the honey bee,
And learn to speak Italian in the beeless glade.

I have been trying to find time to go take a course in beginners French. I studied French in high school MANY years ago. When I went to France three years ago for the first time I was surprised at how much I remembered. Of course when I tried to speak it was a different story. Understanding and communicating are two different things all together. So, Jen, you have inspired me to go ahead and take the class.

We also have mountains that are only called hills. Strange.
Jen, if you give back utttz's third "t", he will grow from a Hill to a Mountain.
