Nice 2 days in Nice
Posted: Wed December 10, 2008 11:03 PM UTC
Hello,

We are three friends (late 20's) visiting Nice for 2 days in Mid january.

With the help of various posts in the forums here are things I think I want to see:

Cours saleya - market place

Promenade des Anglais (anything in particular?? )

Modern and contemprary art mueseum ( Is it really nice ?? we will be coming from paris before this and also are not very much interested in museums )

Le chateau

Villa Kerylos and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild,

Monte carlo (half day or full day ?? )

Old town

Can someone tell me what will be the feasible way to do this?
what should be the order to see these things.. depending on location, time of the day??
what would be the best way to reach each place... any recommendation for restaurants (we will need veg options too)

Which area should we book hotel.. old town or Promenade des Anglais??

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance..

Definitely take a cab (45 minutes) or train to Monaco AND do a full day. The bus transport is great. Get a "tourist card" for a day's ride.

As for Nice, walk the "old city" and check the vendors.

The trains to Monaco leave about every 15-20 minutes. The duration of the trip ranges between 15 - 25 minutes (usually about 20 mins). Cost last time I did it was about 6 Euro (I can't remember if this was for the round trip or not.)
It is a lovely trip and well worth doing. You could do a quickie half day but I would prefer plenty of time for strolling in Monaco so I would take most of the day and go back to Nice in time for dinner. As for the Promenade des Anglais - just walk up and down and you will have a bird's eye view of the world going by. It's especially lovely at twilight. You could also take a train ride in the other direction and have a stroll around Cannes. The squillion dollar yachts are really something to see in both Cannes and Monaco. I have used the Cote'dAzur twice now as a stopoff to catch my breath and relax in between "doing" the Cathedrals, Palaces, Museums etc in the rest of Europe so I don't look for these kind of attractions in Nice, although I do know they are there if you want. What a great way to start the year, I know you will all enjoy it.

RE " the squillion dollar yachts" well... yes Paul Allan spent 40M to create his floating home and now spends 20M per year to keep it afloat, but hey, how much would the security cost if he had to stay on land?

I love the small community of Villafranche. Hotel Welcome sits right on the water and the restaurants on the boardwalk are wonderful. There is an old fort on the hill with a museum of bronze women statues and many other paintings and interesting things. On Bastille Day we went to a dance there...quaint. Can catch the train from Villafranche to Monaco.

Hi ya,
One of the most impressive places I visited on my short trip to Nice was the medieval village of Eze. You can visit Eze Village by bus from Nice on the way to Monaco. (Bus 82 or 112 to Eze Village which you can catch again later on to Monaco - Bus 112 doesn't run Sundays) Visited Eze and Monaco during my trip and the two places were well worth visiting. It is very possible to do Monaco and Eze in half a day. If you only have two days, a full day in Monaco isn't giving you much time to see anything else. A half day in Monaco is loads of time to stroll around and see the main sights.
If you want to see a little more about Eze Village and bus transport info feel free to check out my Eze page - http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/f2cd8/1e5ff/

In Nice itself don't miss the flower market and the chateau hill (if your into photography, don't miss sunset from the hill). As for the Old Town, the best way to explore is to just get lost in the narrow streets, you'll come across all the interesting buildings and squares eventually!!!

Enjoy your trip
Brian

Hello from Nice,

Promenade des Anglais nothing special except Nice Walk and Sun Bath on the beach.

Modern Art Museum -(( not the best but some permanent collections of Yves Klein.

Monte Carlo half day is enough , also interesting Ocean Museum if the weather is rainy.

Train is good option to travel. However I will strongly advise you to travel in"Arriere Pays" if you rent a car.

Many Many wonderfull small villages between 10 to 20 km from Nice.

Old town Cannes no interest at all.

Restaurants are not the best in Nice city. Better to hunt for gastronomy outside Nice Cannes and Antibes

Acceptable veg rest. La Zucca Magica - www.lazuccamagica.com

Old city for Hotel NO; but very acceptable hotels all around

Take care and enjoy your stay
