I'm thinking of a trip to Inverness at the end of the month which could involve an overnight trip.

I'd love to see the Moray Firth dolphins, but as my friend gets seasick easily, a boat trip is out of the question.

That leaves Chanonry Point on the Black Isle to see them from the shore.

Questions -

anyone know if there's a particular time of day or state of the tide when the chances are better?

is the time of year relevant - for example would our chances be better in summer?

We were on the Black Isle over Christmas and New Year a couple of years ago. We never did see dolphins. However, people were surprised that we didn't. I guess it depends on luck, etc. We did see sea eagles, one perching less than 10 feet away, which was an excellent alternative!!

Forgot to say it was early July the year we saw them but - you could be lucky if it is a calm day.

We were there in August and didn't see them. I think it's just a matter of being lucky.So: Good luck!

I went on the boat trip in mid-July and didn't see them. I'll be green with envy if you manage it from the shore! :-)

Best time of the day is with incoming tide (we were told by loacls)
We were rather lucky and did see some 'black points' from Chanonry Point.

I spent all my childhood holidays messing about in boats on the Moray Firth, and never saw anything more interesting than a flounder. Tasty, but not much fun.

I feel I've missed out when it comes to the dolphins.

Anyway, I go there frequently again now, so I must get lucky eventually.

You can also see them from the fortifications around Ft. George but I would take binoculars to get a good sighting

Well, we went this morning.

Incoming tide (good), -5c (bad) and foggy (bad).

It was so cold we only stayed 20 minutes, and saw a couple of things which were either dolphins or porpoise, but not the dramatic leaping pod which the lucky ones see. Next time...

Anyway, we loved the Black Isle countryside totally covered in thick white frost in the morning sun.
