Italian Railways website rejecting foreign cards?

Has anyone used a Canadian Visa credit card to purchase online train tickets at the trenitalia.com Italian Railways website? There is a note about foreign cards not working, but Italian people I know say you can use it, others say no out of country cards works on that site.

What's your experience?

Hy,
I read FFSS rules and the problem is for foreign AMEX only. Foreign Visa and Mastercard are good.
"Payment by Visa and MasterCard
To guarantee greatest customer security, the international Visa and MasterCard circuits require that credit card transactions respect the following security measures:
the typing in of a three-digit security number on the back of the credit card, near the area reserved for the signature.
the authentication by the customer on the appropriate pop up, managed directly by Bankpass, using data that have been given previously to that same customer by the card issuer ("Verified by Visa" and "SecurCode" standard).

PLEASE NOTE: CartaSi informs that credit cards are checked with the IP number of the PC where the purchase has been made. Therefore, and for online purchase only, the transaction could be denied by the credit card circuit.
PLEASE NOTE: For technical reasons, payments with AMERICAN EXPRESS for online purchases are temporarily limited to Italian cards only."

I have purchased tickets on the trenitalia website without problem with a non-Italian VISA card.

For some reason, many North American tourists (Canadian and American) have experienced problems using credit cards with Trenitalia.

I am from Canada and visited Italy this summer and was also unable to use my credit cards (MC and Visa) when I tried to purchase my tickets on line from here. As mentioned in one of the posts, don't sweat it. You can easily purchase your tickets on site from the automated machines with English instructions and your credit cards will work.

Happy travels!

Hello,

Most North American credit cards won't work on the trenitalia sight. The sight might say they do but most of the time they don't. One person had success by calling her credit card company. they did something that enabled her card to work on the sight.

You can just wait until you get to Italy to buy your tickets. There really is no need to pre-purchase them. You can stop by any train station or travel agency to buy your tickets. You can pick them up on the day of travel or buy them all at once on your first day in the country. There really is no benefit from buying them early. In all my trips to Rome I have never had a problem getting the tickets I wanted for the dates and times I needed.

best answer i heard about making reservations at trenitalia and some of the other train web sites is that you have to hold your mouth just so so for them to work properly. me and some other people tried the site about one hundred times .got it to work right for us just once.
i would contact an american express travel service office and see if you can get the ticket there. it might be 10 to 20 dollars more.

We have had a few forums on this problem. Lots of people are having non-Italian cards rejected. The transaction never even makes it to your credit card company so they are unable to help complete the transaction. It seems to be blocked very early by Trenitalia or Verify-by-VISA which they use to prevent fraud.
