Take the bus from Queenstown to Wanaka - Omarama - Mt. Cook Village (Intercity and local shuttle in Twizel only) - Lake Tekapo - Christchurch.
Here you could consider a day or two day trip to the West Coast, either by bus or TranzAlpine train to Greymouth, down to the glaciers (if you are interested) or straight back. The trip via Arthur's Pass is fantastic, by both train and bus. I guess you do not want to drive yourself, as you do not mention car as an option - but the road trip is better by car as there are so many places where you really want to stop...
Back in Chch, you can decide either to carry on travelling by bus, or get on the TranzCoastal train to Picton, stopover in Kaikoura. Ferry to Wellington (there are train/ferry deals).
From Wellington you could take the Overlander train to the Tongariro National Park. From there I suggest to take the bus up to Taupo and Rotorua, and finally to Auckland. If you run out of time at Tongariro, get back on the train and head straight up to Auckland. But it would be a pity to miss Rotorua.
