Uruguay visiting Montevideo
Posted: Sun December 7, 2008 09:54 PM UTC
I will be visiting Argentina in Feburary. We have only 16 days. While in Buenos Aires we would like to go over to Montevideo. If we take a ferry will there be a bus which we can take from the ferry to Montevieo? How long will the whole trip take. If we spend just one night in Montevideo, will it be worth it, or will we just be spending one day getting there and the other day returning.

If we have a day there what would be most interesting to do or see?

Muchas gracias.

Yes, there are buses that go from the ferry port and from a separate bus station about a block away. You need not go immediately on to Montevideo. Whether coming or going you should spend 2-3 hours walking around Colonia, the Uruguayan ferry port.

I would think that having only one night between travel to and away from Montevideo would be too limiting. Although smaller than Buenos Aires it is a large city. I think you would enjoy a little extra time soaking up the more laid-back atmosphere.

It is about 3 hours if you take the direct ferry to Montevideo, and obviously the same on the return, but you can take a late afternoon one back so you would have most of your second day for touring around. As for the most interesting thing to do or see? Hummmm, I will let someone else address that question.

suerte

Hi,

You have several ferry options from BA to MVD. The fastest is a 3 hours ferry going straight to MVD port (no buses).
Other option is the ferry to Colonia and then the bus to MVD. There you have another 2 possibilities: 1) a fast 50 minutes ferry; 2) a 3 hours ferry. If you purchase your ticket to MVD that includes the bus.

Anyway, as someone suggested, I also reccomend to spend at least a couple of hours walking around Colonia historial site and then take the bus to MVD (2.5 hours).

Once in MVD, you should not miss Ciudad Vieja, Plaza Independencia, Teatro Solis, a walk along the coast in Pocitos... etc.

I think that is a 2 days/1 night tour. If you have any extra day to spend, go to Punta del Este.

Hope it helps.

I have just returned from Argentina and we spent a plesant day in Colonia, which on the fast ferry from Buenos Aires, took about an hour. After the noise and pollution of Buenos Aires, it was really good to get away for the day as Colonia could be a million miles away - although we went mid week.

The ferry is operated by a company called www.buquebus.com and they operate all sorts of packages and trips from the port to various destinations. It is very easy to buy the ticket at the port in BA, as the staff are very helpful.
