Following all the advice have chosen to make Trier our destination for a four day break.
Is there a cheap rail fare between Trier and Luxembourg.?
Seem to recall on previous trip to an other part of Germany one could get
cheaper fare if willing to use slower trains.
Any suggestions as regards day trip will be much appreciated.

There are direct trains from Trier to Luxembourg City that take around 45 minutes and cost between either 14.40 or 17.40 (Intercity).
Hardly worthwhile to spend much time looking for cheaper fares, I think.

Forgot to mention: prices in euros

There is the "Tageskarte DeLux", a day ticket which is for Trier to Luxembourg (here always in the sense of the whole country of Luxembourg) EUR 10,80.
This ticket covers the buses in Trier, the regional trains towards Luxembourg. And all buses and trains inside Luxembourg.
There is however no mini group version of this offer available.

VRT (local public transport network of the Trier region).

There are mini group day tickets. Price depends on the number of zones. E.g. to Bernkastel-Kues you need ticket for 9 zones (mini group day ticket is EUR 20,00).

For trips beyond the VRT area but still inside the states Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland you can use the Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket (EUR 26,00). Again a mini group (2-5 persons) day ticket. Valid
Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day
Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

The price is 10,40 for a day return ticket from Trier to Luxembourg (farther places are also available, as you will read, I guess they are also cheaper than ordinary tickets). The website says that the offer is valid on both IC and RE trains. You should be able to buy it at any ticket machine in the respective cities and at counters for 2 euro in addition. It is valid on any day.
Even if you need an one-way ticket, this seems to be a better option for you.
