The city will have a lot of special events in the nightclubs, restaurants, and special venues. If you're looking for special outdoor gatherings, do remember that it is often -20 Celsius on a Montreal New Year's Eve, so outdoor festivities tend to be rather brief. ;) I know that in the Old Port (around Rue St Paul) there are fireworks.
