Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Trier Trier is it a good place for a 4 day break. ???
Posted: Tue December 2, 2008 11:55 PM UTC
Purchased cheap flight to Frankfurt Hann airport which is a bit remote.
Anyone offer advice on a choice between Cologne or possibily going to Trier for a four night break in early December..
We are no longer young but very active as regards walking and getting about to see different places. I gather Trier has a nice Chritmas market but I wonder are there other attractions there.??
Anyone been there and what was it like./?
Thank You

I can only hope that my research into Trier is correct as I am planning to spend three nights there next September. You can do a day trip to Luxembourg. It only takes 40mins and the trains are very regular. There is however, much to see in Trier itself. It is after all, the oldest city in Germany and is steeped in history from Roman times. I don't think you can go wrong by choosing Trier. I will look forwad to hearing all about it when you get back. Enjoy Germany!

As Marimelda has already pointed out, Trier is Germany's oldest city, founded by the Romans. It has outstanding cultural and historical sites, with nine World Heritage sites. The oldest church was built in the year 300! All sites are in fabulous condition, and the beautiful thing is that Trier is relatively small, so everything is within walking distance.

Not only Luxemburg is worth a visit. As Trier is on the Mosel river, which is famous for its wine, you can do some wine tasting.

It is a pity that you come in winter and not in a milder season. Then you could make a cruise on the Mosel. Still you can visit some of the romantic wine villages along the river. Perhaps they even offer bus tours. Not forget the Christmas market(s) at this time of the year.

Even without river cruise there are still enough attractions and activities, so you will have a great time.

Thanks to all who offered their advice on which destination might be best.
I will post a report when we return and when we pick either Koln or Trier.
Thank you all again.

I agree with most posters for Trier. Its individual doable, with lots of history, and sites near each other. Nice river bank with promenade; good food, nice walk trails along the arenes, and very close to luxembourg city, i do round trip between the two, and love place d'armes in luxembourg city.

cologne is nice, but bigger city ,for my personal preferences i choose Trier.

do pick Trier, and in case you find it boring follow those tips on the Moselle valley here. Daytrip alternatives are -- as pointed out -- Luxembourg, or Koblenz on the Moselle river, easily reached by train, it's a gorgeous train ride too!
