Brisbane weekend in Brisbane and Queensland
Posted: Wed November 26, 2008 01:38 AM UTC
Hi everyone,

Two of my friends and I want to go to Brisbane for the weekend, it's going to be 2 full days. We are going to spend some time in the city and view the very best of it, then hire a car and go for some beaches or/and wild life parks.

Could you please advise how to do it best, we don't mind distances and can easily roam in 200-300km range from Brisbane. So we need advices on:

- the very best of Brisbane city
- spectacular beaches around ( I know Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, any else?)
- some park with wild life or just good forest/mountain views, where we could spend about a half of a day.

Thanks!

Brisbane City, Southbank has markets, pubs, bars, cafes & restaurants, also a beach and pool just off the river, a must either day or night. The river cat is a transport ferry, very fast, for a few dollars( 3 or 4) you can take the 2 hour ride up and back down the river. There is a jetty pick up at Southbank. At night visit the Casino etc etc.

With your car I suggest you visit the Sunshine Coast, approx 1.5 hours drive from Brisbane. We had a week at Noosa Heads beach, just fantastic, also the Australia Zoo is nearby, also the Eumbundi markets is a must - Wrong Spelling.

You are welcome to view my pages, you may find something that appeals.

Good Luck,
Mike

The very best of Brisbane...is outside of Brisbane. Grab your car and head out of Brisbane ASAP north to Noosa if you'd like a beautiful beach and some great hiking...or head South to Byron Bay if you like a beautiful beach with a great party scene and a joint.

Also, not too far away is Australia Zoo!

Happy travels :)

South of the Gold Coast past Kingsliff & Cabaritta (btw Cabaritta is pretty good) is the fabulous beach Hastings Point. Just past North Star Caravan Resort on your right hand side, take the first little turning on the left. You will get the best of both worlds....a gorgeous inlet that leads down to an awesome beach. Further on south past Pottsville, hang a left and go the coast road that heads to Mooball & Byron Bay. Half way along the long stretch you can turn off on your left and visit Black Rock beach. It's a local well kept secret and a big long stretch of white sand usually with noone in site! Byron Bay is great for lunch & the markets if you visit on the weekend.

btw, if you do decide to go north, my favourite spot is Tin Can Bay.

Have a great holiday!!
Cheers, Ann :o)

Come on guys...the OP wants to go to Brisbane for 2 days. Not Byron bloody Bay...despite stating that he/she is willing to go out of the way to avoid Brisbane by driving 300 kms , surely there are options in Brisbane itself to keep normal people entertained for 48 hours...???!!! ( if you said a week I would give different advice). Yesterday (Sunday)I drove from north Brisbane to the centre of town (70kms return)twice to avoid my offspring having to find parking near the riverside markets area while they did a Lunch time cruise on the Kookaburra Queen. Yuk.. it's a pain in the butt. Traffic congestion is terrible even at weekends.I'm still glueing tufts of hair back on my head!

If you can avoid using a car and restrict your movement to public transport, your 48 hour visit will be enjoyable rather than a pain.
Check out the VT Brisbane travel guide ...some activities that come to mind = City Cat River Trip, South Bank swimming pool(south bank and precinct itself good for a full day...stay at hotel nearby & you can walk there!!), Mount Cootha (view point and restaurant)---just a few of the options. If you are young and impressionable, I believe Brisbane has one of the best jazz, rock, alternative , whatever music scenes not just in Oz but the world. Check that out!! Also the above mentioned Kookaburra Queen lunch and visit to Riverside Markets ( that's 5 hours taken care of).If you found accom near South Bank nearly everything would be accessible via the City Cats on the river. Have a great time in Brisbane City (forget the flesh pots 2 hours drive away! Why spend 4 hours in a car driving??) de pedro
