Cologne Cologne on Monday?
Posted: Tue November 25, 2008 07:43 PM UTC
After trying to put together the perfect itinerary for our trip, it seems the only day we will be able to get to Cologne will be on a Monday in June. Will there be many attractions closed this day? What would you recommend we should see that is open on a Monday?

If you could please say which Monday in June you mean, and also tell us what you particularly would like to see or do in Cologne during your visit the better chance of a a specific reply
(Completing your Profile on your Home Page does help people who answer questions to at least have some idea of your special interests).

Hi, thank you for the reply. This is my first time posting here so I will be sure to include more details in the future. We will be arriving in Cologne on Mon, June 8th (coming by train from Brussels) I want to see the Dom Cathedral for sure and I dont know what else as I am not sure what there is to do here. We like tours and beer and festivals or just walking around in the town and taking pictures. This is our honeymoon so looking for some fun, memorable things together. We will be heading to St. Goar the next day to tour the castles on the Rhine, then to Amsterdam, all by train.

Welcome to VT! Sounds like you have a wonderful honeymoon trip planned.

Many art galleries and Museums are closed in Cologne on Mondays but as you have only one day there I think you will find plenty to do visiting the Cathedral - and just walking around, feeling and absorbing the atmosphere.
You could take a look at the Cologne Travel Guide on VT - just put Cologne in the Destination Search at top right of the page then look for Things to Do Tips. That would give you a good idea of what to specially look out for.

I am sure you will enjoy the castles of the Rhine and if you want to see some art there are some excellent galleries in Amsterdam!
I wish you a very happy honeymoon and long marriage.

If I were you, I'd try to get to the area around Cologne too.

Dusseldorf is wonderful. In particular the Altstadt there. Bonn also isn't bad. Especially the Museum there that looks at immediate post-war history.

Have a nice one!

Dom is going to be pretty much all that is open on Monday. The tour takes about an hour. English tour is daily at 2:30 pm.
I suggest walking the Rhine promenade and having lunch at one of the restaurants there. Then head to the shopping districts at Schildergasse or Hohe Strasse in the Alstadt.
Also don't miss the many stores and eating places in Cologne Main Railway Station.
All of this can be done on foot except Schildergasse. You probably want to take U-Bahn to get there.
