I live in the UK, and have a Visa Debit card, and was wondering can I use it in stores in America to pay for products?

Hi. You shouldn't have any problems. If it's a visa, it should be accepted just as a regular visa card. You may need to enter a PIN when it's swiped.

I assume it is a card that is attached to your checking (current) account but has a Visa logo on it. If so, you can use it in any store that takes a Visa credit card (and this is virtually all of them). In a few places, like supermarkets, they may ask you to put in your PIN, as mentioned previously, but this will be the exception. You can also use the card in ATMs to get cash.

You'll be fine everywhere with a Visa Debit card. But one warning...

As a fellow Brit in New York I've found it's always easier to say 'Credit' when asked if you're paying by debit or credit - even if you're using a debit card. It always works fine that way.

However, if you say debit you'll be asked to punch in your pin number in supermarkets etc as described above.... only with a UK debit card it doesn't work!! I think it's because we don't have the same system.

(But no worries - pin numbers always work fine for getting cash out of a machine)

Ask your bank first - there might only be problems on that end. But assuming that the bank allows it, you'll have no problems. I don't have any credit cards and rely solely on my debit.

We visited Nyc this year from the UK and used our Visa card, although some places did ask for photo ID. Of course we have no ID card's like in the states, or on our driving licence, we therefore showed our passports. Otherwise there is never a problem.
Hope you have a great time
