Obvious question, but is sncf.fr the best way to buy lowest price TGV tickets?

The best way to buy the lowest price TGV tickets is to purchase them from SNCF's own website 90 days before travel:

www.voyages-sncf.com

The only problem is that the English language access to the site has been removed. There is a URL tweak one can make to recover them but it is not terribly convenient.

I have heard that many of the cheapest fares (PREMs) are available there.

While they do sell TGV tickets, sites listing themselves as the "Official Eurail Site" usually sell them at a premium.

Keep in mind that picking up tickets purchased on line can be done any time at any SNCF ticket window or boutique. You will need two items:

1. The confirmation number

2. The credit card in hand used for the on line purchase

once you have chosen the route, then it brings you back to voyages-sncf for the actual purchase. the PREM tickets are the cheapest but are non cancellable and non refundable once you print them so be sure on your schedules. whatever tickets you choose, you need to bring an id with you, same name on ticket and passport for example.
its a real easy relax and fast way to travel in France. You will be fine.
